Looking for a fun Star Wars-inspired activity that gets kids away from screens and sparks their creativity? These DIY pool noodle lightsabers are easy to make, inexpensive, and perfect for kids of all ages. It's a great Star Wars STEM activity to add to any Star Wars birthday party, a themed summer camp, homeschool activity, or family movie night, this project combines crafting, storytelling, and a little engineering for an adventure that's out of this galaxy.
A Long Time Ago in a Backyard Far, Far Away...
Every Jedi and Sith must construct their own lightsaber. In the Star Wars universe, a lightsaber is more than just a weapon—it's a reflection of the person who wields it. The color, design, and special features tell the story of who they are and the path they choose.
For our Star Wars Week family camp, the kids became engineers, designers, and Jedi apprentices as they created lightsabers that were uniquely their own.
What You'll Need
Pool noodle (for the lightsaber blade)
Duct tape or colored tape
Aluminum foil
Craft foam or construction paper
Markers
Stickers, gems, or other decorative items
Scissors
Battery-operated flashlight (optional)
Adult helper
Step 1: Choose Your Path
Before building, have each child decide what type of character they want to be.
Ideas include:
Jedi Knight
Jedi Master
Sith Lord
Rebel Pilot
Mandalorian Warrior
A completely original Star Wars hero
This simple step encourages imaginative play and helps guide the design of their lightsaber.
Step 2: Build the Handle
Use tape, craft foam, paper, or aluminum foil to decorate one end of the pool noodle and create a handle.
Encourage kids to think like engineers:
Where is the power button?
Where is the Kyber Crystal hidden?
Does the lightsaber have any special features?
Is it designed for speed, power, or defense?
There are no wrong answers—only creative ones.
Step 3: Add Galactic Details
Now it's time to personalize the lightsaber.
Decorate with:
Symbols
Patterns
Stickers
Gems
Galactic markings
Favorite colors
The goal is to create something that feels unique to its owner.
Step 4: Make It Glow
For an extra wow factor, insert a small battery-operated flashlight into the bottom opening of the pool noodle.
With an adult's help:
Place the flashlight inside the opening.
Secure it with tape if needed.
Turn off the lights and activate your lightsaber.
The light shines through the foam, creating an awesome glowing effect that makes nighttime Jedi training even more exciting.
For a unique spin, point the flashlight backwards so the light shines out (you'll need to cut a hole in the "handle" so you can push your flashlight button). You can also use battery operated string lights and place them inside the length of the pool noodle for a magical look.
Add a STEM Twist
This activity isn't just a craft—it's also a chance to introduce basic engineering concepts.
Ask kids to explain their design choices:
Why did they choose that color?
What special powers does their lightsaber have?
What type of missions would they use it for?
What makes it different from everyone else's?
By encouraging kids to think through their design decisions, they practice creative problem-solving and storytelling skills.
Did You Know? The Meaning Behind Lightsaber Colors
In Star Wars lore, lightsabers are powered by special crystals called Kyber Crystals. Different colors are often associated with different strengths and personalities.
🔵 Blue – Courage and protection
🟢 Green – Wisdom and connection to the Force
🟣 Purple – Balance and individuality
🔴 Red – Power and ambition
🟡 Yellow – Guardians and protectors
Of course, your young Jedi can always invent their own color and create a completely new meaning.
Bonus Challenge
After building their lightsaber, have each child create a character profile.
Give their lightsaber:
A Name
A Color
A Special Ability
A Home Planet
Then have them draw themselves using their lightsaber on their next mission across the galaxy.
