Friday Fun: Science Experiments to Kick Off the Weekend

Is there anything better than ending the week with a little fun, a little learning, and a whole lot of “wow” moments? At our house, Friday afternoons are made for gathering around the kitchen table, pulling out some simple supplies, and letting curiosity take over.

Whether you’re a parent looking for an easy way to entertain the kids, a teacher hoping to sneak in some hands-on learning, or a kid who just loves watching science come to life — these experiments are guaranteed crowd-pleasers. The best part? You only need a few everyday ingredients!

So grab some jars, food coloring, and a little creativity… and let’s turn an ordinary Friday into a bubbling, swirling, rainbow-filled adventure.

🪔 DIY Lava Lamps

Bubbly and mesmerizing — this one never gets old! Kids love the magic of watching the “lava” rise and fall, and adults will secretly be just as fascinated.

What You Need:

  • A clear jar or plastic bottle

  • Vegetable oil

  • Water

  • Food coloring

  • Alka-Seltzer tablets (or any fizzing antacid)

How To Do It:

  1. Fill your bottle 2/3 with oil, then add water almost to the top.

  2. Drop in 6–8 drops of food coloring — watch as it sinks through the oil into the water layer.

  3. Break an Alka-Seltzer tablet into a few pieces and drop them in one at a time.

  4. Sit back and watch the bubbling “lava lamp” show!

Extra Fun: Shine a flashlight from below or place your jar on a light-up base for a glowing, nighttime effect.

🌈 Magic Milk Rainbow Experiment

This one is pure color-play with a splash of science. The reaction between milk, food coloring, and vinegar creates stunning swirls that look like liquid rainbows.

What You Need:

  • A shallow dish or pie pan

  • Milk (whole works best, but any will do)

  • Food coloring

  • A few drops of vinegar

  • Cotton swabs or droppers

How To Do It:

  1. Pour milk into your dish until it just covers the bottom.

  2. Add drops of food coloring in different spots across the surface.

  3. Dip a cotton swab into vinegar, then touch it gently to the surface of the milk.

  4. Watch the colors explode, swirl, and dance into rainbow patterns!

Extra Fun: Take slow-motion videos — the colors bloom in the most mesmerizing ways.

Why We Love These

Friday Experiments

  • Easy ingredients: You probably already have everything in your kitchen.

  • Kid-approved wow factor: The reactions are fast, colorful, and engaging.

  • Sneaky science lessons: Density, chemical reactions, and surface tension — explained through fun.

  • Family + classroom friendly: Perfect for after school, weekend playdates, or a Friday classroom reward.

So the next time Friday rolls around, instead of turning on a screen right away, grab the kids, set out a few supplies, and spark some curiosity. Science doesn’t have to be complicated to be magical. 🌟

Here’s to weekends that start with fun, laughter, and maybe just a little bit of learning.
